Elk Hunting 2012:
Blog Your Hunts!

Report your elk hunting progress, or "close encounters of the herd kind" in 2012. Give us reports of how it's going or how it went for your season. Start one of your own by simply clicking here , or add yours as a "comment" below. Keep us updated.

Successful elk hunting starts with close encounters. We want to hear about yours. What have you seen and heard on your elk hunts?

Those "close encounters", without kills, provide a wealth of learning experience. Please share it. Is there anything you would have done differently?

If you kill one tell the whole, detailed story, or just tell us what you harvested and whether it was rifle or archery. Don't forget the pictures.

Any elk kill is a success story. There are many areas that are encouraging the hunting of cow elk because of large herd numbers. Tell us about antlerless elk success, as well.

What did you do right that lead to your hunting success? What did you learn and what could you have done better?

BackCountry Bull 2012
by: CaseyAlbert

Though the season was slow, it was also successful. On day six of our BackCountry Bowhunt, we finally got close to a couple bulls during the early afternoon. The bull that I subsequently killed was 10 to 15 yards away, and invisible. He spooked at something, and so we rapidly departed the area to set up camp for the evening.

Approaching sunset, we made our way back out onto a favorite ridge of mine to call. The bull responded far below us. We returned to camp to enjoy a great trout dinner.

In the morning, we moved back out to the ridge and were greeted by the same bull at about 830am. The two bulls moved up and across the mountain, keeping us advised of their location fairly often. At about 1100am, the satellite decided to check us out. He was spared an arrowed death as the herd bull came over to see what all the commotion was about. Three more steps and that satellite would have been history.

About 45 minutes later, we heard a crashing coming down through the woods. A cow appeared, and just as suddenly turned and was headed directly at us. When it got to about 10 feet, I could stand still no more and stepped back while grabbing my buds arm. We could have touched her as she passed by. The herd bull continued voicing his position about every 20 minutes. At 130pm, he obviously had heard us snapping twigs and was coming over to investigate.

At about 40 yards, we heard him and got a good visual on a very nice bull. That bull made his final bugle just about the time I was drawing for a shot. He was broadside at about 20 yards as I released the arrow. My bud being on his first archery elk hunt jumped sideways to try to get a shot as I was letting out a cow call to calm him. The bull ran down into a drainage, and although I couldn't see him I knew he was still.

I thought I had hit him high, but did not want to push him. I walked quietly to where I had shot him and over to his tracks heading back from where he had come. While looking down towards the drainage, I heard noise and could see some commotion. I heard some crashing and thought he was departing. Then there was silence. I kept my eyes peeled to the spot where I had seen movement.

Once we got set up I had my bud stand in my spot as I moved towards the spot. About halfway, I spotted the expired bull. Upon examination, the shot had been as good as it gets, but the bull never bled a drop externally. He died 110 yards from where I had shot him.

He was about 8 1/2 miles from the trailhead. Thank God for horses and special people that allowed us to retrieve the bull in one round trip. Total strangers lent us their trailer and two horses to do the job. I was not a horse person, but I am now!

I was extremely concerned about losing this bull to bears or the heat, but all ended exceptionally well and the meat is in the freezer. This years hunt was an incredible adventure with the added bonus of scoring a nice bull. Elk season is only 11 1/2 months away!
