180 grain Barnes Triple Shock Bullet 99.88% Retention

180 grain Barnes Triple Shock Bullet 99.88% Retention

Just a quick note and photo on my 2014 Montana elk hunt - what a great year. Attached is a photo of the public land bull that I was lucky enough to harvest the second day of the trip (Nov. 8). Hunting dark timber I was able to connect on a 70 yard shot. Tikka T3 Lite .30-06 with 180 grain Barnes Triple Shock Bullet. I was able to recover the bullet stuck just inside the skin on the opposite side of the elk. After passing almost completely through this bull I still had 179.79 bullet weight retention - outstanding! He only went about 70 yards. Aside from not passing completely through I was very pleased with this bullet's performance. I will be taking a year off in 2015 but will be back on the attack in 2016 - I am already missing not elk hunting next fall! Love your sight Dave, lots of great info and how-to stuff.

Nice shot
by: DrHunter

Nice shot! you were so lucky to get back the bullet. It's almost a better prize than the elk itself

nice bull
by: mountain walker

Sorry I sometimes get caught up in writing a review with out comments on what i thought of the the Elk that was taken. That is a really nice bull you got there!! As for the copper bullets ,I have not tried them but do like how they go though bone?. I do really like federal tipped troupe bonded bear claw, I think they are a really good bullet! They stay together really well and federal does load them pretty hot and they are fast. If by chance I make a shot into the shoulder bone . I'm sure it well go though into the lungs , and for bear protection it well do a number on them I'm sure, as there is grizzly were I hunt! Good luck getting back into the mountains this fall and ,good hunting!

Scheming
by: Jarrod

I can't take it! I'm plotting ways to get back west this fall. If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out but it won't be for lack of effort on my part. I have even thought about passing on a license this year and taking my brother in law out and trying to hook him up with a bull. Something about just being in the mountains that recharges a mans spirit and cleanses the soul!

Yes, there are definitely higher priorities than elk hunting. Good men know what those are. I hope your sports season goes well.

Taking a year off
by: Jarrod

Yes, it is a bummer to know all ready that I will not be elk hunting in 2015 but the guys I normally travel with are doing a bow hunt next year and they will be hunting right during the heart of my sons youth football season in September. I also coach. Some priorities are a little higher than others but elk hunting is definitely near the top and I have only been doing it for 5 years - very addicting!
