I got a tag for the Urraca WMA just north of Taos for this October and wanted to know if anyone knows anything about that area as far as Elk hunting goes? I'm also new to big game hunting so any beginner tips would be appreciated.

Looking to hunt in SE NM, Area 36 and 34

I have put in for two muzzle loader hunts in these areas. I am somewhat familiar with 34 but can someone give some good starting points for 36. Haven't been able to do much scouting due to being in Korea the last year. Looking for anyone's expertise.

First Elk Hunt

Hi all,
I finally got drawn for a late elk hunt in Unit 28, north of Road 506 and south of the boundary line of the Lincoln National Forest (New Mexico). It is a Military access area, but a few civilians got tags to hunt in December this year. I was lucky enough to be one of them. My question is:
Has anyone ever hunted that area before, and what would be the best strategy and place to hunt?
I have an "either sex" tag, and I am really looking for the meat, not necessarily the mount. I also have knee and ankle problems, so walking a lot is not an option for me. Any suggestions would be well received and appreciated.

New Mexico Unit 49

I drew a tag for 2010 but got deployed to Iraq and missed 2010 and 2011. When I came home I put in, and for kicks, also put in for my 76 year-old father-in-law who is an avid hunter. As luck would have it, he drew and I didn't, so now I am trying to set him up with a good hunt. If anyone has tips on areas to start scouting, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Looking for suggestions for hunting 1st rifle season in NM unit 52. Have hunted San Antonio mt. Scouting reveals extreme dry conditions in central and south areas. Plan to scout NE. Need some help. Thanks!
