Montana, Colorado, or Oregon?

by Jud Baxley
(Leland, NC, USA)

I've wanted to go Hunt Elk for a while now and. Final have a a few chances. The guy that I buy my bow stuff from wants me to go with him to Oregon, my uncle wants me to go to Colorado, and my wife's cousin lives in Montana and wants me to join him. I want to go where I will have the best chance of seeing good bulls and hopefully taking. Any ideas? Also since I've never had the opportunity to do this before any suggestions on gear would be great. I am a bow hunter and want to take a bull with my bow. Any info or tips and insight would be great.

How my hunting partners are.
by: Jud Baxley

Thanks Pat. I know if I go to Colorado my uncle has taught me everything I know about hunting from cleaning and eating what I kill to making good ethical shots. If I go to Montana I'm not sure how hard of a hunter my wife's cousin is. If my hunting buddy wants to go I know we hunt the same way and live to get up early and get ready to hit the woods. Me and him hunt Ohio for whitetail every year for a week and hunt as hard as we can. If I go to Oregon I know he hunts hard and we get along good with?

All are good, pick the right partner

Jud, you are in the right place to get lots of good tips for Elk hunting. Read the whole site!
It sounds to me that you are new at this so you need to start off right. You will get all the tips you need here and experience will only come with time.
A major decision is not so much which of those States you hunt in but who you choose to hunt with.
A hunting partner can make or break a hunt.
Is he a good sportsman? Will he follow the rules and respect the game he hunts?
Can you reasonably expect to not drive each other crazy after a few days in the woods?
Will he carry his own weight and some of yours if necessary?

In my opinion the choice of hunting companions outweighs most other considerations. Equipment can be purchased, guides can be hired but the memories of a good hunt with a good partner are priceless.
