Bow hunting alone on first elk hunt - crazy idea ?
by Erik
(Minnesota)
I live in Minnesota and have stacked up a couple Colorado preference points. I have wilderness (moose) hunting experience, good gear, and am in good shape, but I haven't hunted elk before. I am planning on going next year, I have been studying, watching videos, etc. I am wondering if going alone with a bow is doable. I have been archery hunting a few years here in Minnesota for whitetails. My feeling is that two possible hunting partners are shaky, so I might be stuck alone. Is it a crazy idea ?
I have heard that sometimes calling and shooting an elk with a bow is challenging, because sometimes the animal will come straight at you, so no good archery kill shot. Other than loneliness, that seems like the big challenge of going it alone. It appears I can pay a ranch to help me pack out meat in the area I'm looking at going to.

Got Snowed out in AZ, Unit 6A north. Would like to go back out to hunt in 6A South and am looking at Camp Verde, AZ area. Does anyone have any recommendations for that area they would care to share?

A friend and I are looking at doing our first elk hunt together next year. We have decided on Colorado but looking at the big game guide we are having trouble even figuring out where to start at picking a unit. Being completely new to this I would appreciate any and all advice you can give me on elk hunting. I understand if you don't want to give me specific units but if you could give me some ideas on where to start that would be great. Also, any tips and pointers on hunting elk would also be appreciated.
Thanks for any and all comments and or suggestions.

First time Elk hunter

I've hunted deer and turkey's for several years in Missouri, but I have never been Elk hunting. A friend of mine invited me to go with him and his son bow hunting this Sept. in Colorado. We are supposed to hunt in unit's 16 or 161, can anyone give me some advice on how to find the Elk in these units and do they get a lot of hunting pressure. I really like this web site and feel like it has an abundance of very helpful information and check it out often. Thank you

Any old timers have some tips? Ive been hunting the same area now for two years and i scout around out there throughout the year. Trouble is, during elk season the only tracks i seem to find are days old. I'm mindful of my scent, wind direction, and i know there's bulls where i'm hunting, i just cant seem to find tracks with a bull still standing in them. Also, i am not a trophy hunter, i just want the opportunity to take a decent bull. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
