First Elk

by Tater
(Sheridan, Arkansas)

I took the advice I received from this website and was successful in not only working with the guide but was fortunate to down this elk 5X5 (it's a 10 point in Arkansas)LOL!!! The hunt was not easy as we didn't see any elk or hear any the first day of hunting. I am not sure what this elk scored but I know it will feed my family for a while.

The shot was less than 200 yards and the animal was taken with a model 700 Remington 7MM STW and a 160 grain Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw round which performed perfectly(dropped him in his tracks), which made us happy considering the undergrowth and cover we were in. Something about a large animal and how they can get in some of the smallest and most difficult places to get to or out. LOL I have total respect for anyone that does this type hunting by themselves.

I wanted to Thank You and Your Forum and the folks that share on here for the knowledge and information that helped me find an elk I was quite happy with.

Thanks again!
Tater

Congrats!
by: Steve

Way to go man!!! Congratulations. This site, like you said, is phenomenal. It is by far the finest resource on elk hunting, from A to Z, I've ever encountered. Keep coming back to it as you will learn more and more every time you visit.

I'm envious of all the meat you have to feed your family this year. I struck out on archery season. I have a seven day spike hunt starting tomorrow ... won't be able to get out til Thurs though.

Regarding First Elk
by: Jarrod (Wisconsin)

Congrats on you your first bull, Tater! What a great feeling, huh? I can totally relate to your dilemma of not seeing animals right away - we went 3 days last year before seeing elk. Maintaining focus is huge when the going is tough and you aren't seeing much. Nice job on dropping him in his tracks - where did you hit him? What state were you hunting in?

Congrats Again!

5 Point Bull
by: Dave, Elk Hunting Tips (MT)

Way to go, Tater! Where did you hit the bull? Remind us again what state you were hunting in.

Enjoy that fine meat! I just had two helpings of corned elk hash. I'll post the recipe and procedure as soon as I can find time between hunting and working!

Do it again next year! (How about an archery hunt?)
