Wolf Attack During Elk Hunt?

by Dave, Elk Hunting Tips.Net
(Garrison, MT)

An elk hunter in Idaho killed a wolf with her .44 mag while calling elk from ten feet away. She had a wolf license, but says she killed it in self-defense. If she had not had a license, would she have gotten cited for breaking the Endangered Species Act? You can read the article here. Then come back and tell us what you think.

Don't think the wolf knew
by: Steve

I've heard this stuff before, but I don't believe the wolf knew what she was. He was responding to the bugle. She was likely in good camo and had good scent control.

With all of the wolves we have in the northern Rockies, Canada and Alaska, there has been only one confirmed wolf kill on a human being on record. And that was at a logging or mining camp where the workers had been feeding wolves by hand. Not a good idea.

Wolves respond to bugles just like we do. This wolf was not going to do anything to this woman, imo. He just thought she was an elk.

The only time I would kill a wolf is if he was after meat from my one of my kills and became aggressive about it. But I'd bet my life once he saw me, he'd be gone like a fart in the wind.

Dead Wolf/Good Wolf
by: Dave, Elk Hunting Tips (MT)

I would, too. It just dawned on me that her wolf permit was probably archery only. I was wondering why they were justifying it as self-defense.

Someone saw a wolf in the area I hunt yesterday. I saw and heard no elk today.

Smart wolves don't get close
by: Pat Cassidy

Wolves are pretty canny animals and generally stay well away from humans.
I would have to say that if one got within revolver range, and was facing me, that it knew exactly what it was doing. I would probably do the same thing she did.
