White cow elk harvested.

by Mike Hernandez
(Laveen Arizona.)

Hows it goin fellas. Wanted to take a few minutes and tell you about my harvest last archery season. I live in Arizona and have been bow huntin for the last 5 years in the same unit. I have had a few close calls but could never seal the deal. That is till last year. You see we had a few new hunters with us and one had successfully harvested a cow on our hunt but had told us that he had seen what he believed to be a white elk. Well time was running out so I decided to hunt at his tree stand this evening. I was ready. I had decided to take my bow from the hanger and hold onto it at a certain time so I did.

Then from my right I seen elk running toward the water hole I was at. And guess what came in with another cow and two little ones, A White cow elk. I couldn't believe what I was seeing my heart pounding out of my chest as I watched these cows slowly walk towards the water hole. They were very leery smelling, looking just not sure on coming into the water hole. Then the little ones headed in followed by the brown then the white elk. I closed my eyes to calm down watched as the two little ones drink and the other two headed into the water hole.

I had my bow in hand trigger on the loop arrow in my bow. Just waiting for the perfect time to pull my string back. When I did it kinda startled the elk but they were still there. I put my sites on the brown elk but I wanted the white one so I moved my sites onto her. She was facing away from me quartering. I needed her to turn a little for me to get a good shot. She finally did I took my time and squeezed my trigger and the arrow was on its way. It found its mark and as she was running away. I could see it was a perfect shot. Due to the color of her hide it showed up real good. The others ran off as she did. I had to sit back down on the tree stand so to regain my legs. I called others from camp and told them to head up I was in need of help. We found her about 100yrds from the tree stand. And boy was everyone shocked on what I had just harvested. This was my first big game taken with my bow. I had her shoulder mounted and her hide tanned to preserve the hunt memories for the rest of my life. I am attaching a pic for you guys. Hope you like it. I could only send one pic I have others if you would like to see others let me no.
Talk to you soon.

Man, Mike, that is goofy looking! Congratulations. I would have probably been determined to take that one, too. I wish I could see it on the hoof! You didn't photo it before you shot, did you?
