GMU 55
by: Arlie

Hey Bob...

I've been hunting 55 since 1984. We started hunting muzzle loader in 2000. Previous to that we hunted all of the rifle elk seasons. I have hunted lost canyon on numerous occasions in the third season. If it's still warm you might want to try hunting in the Cement Creek area. Walrod Gulch, Double Top and Spring Creek are all good. Heavy green timber on the tops of the ridges usually hold some good elk. It's a summer range area for them and unless there is some major snow they tend to hang in there till the end of Oct., or so. Hope this helps.

Find Round Mtn.
by: Dave - MI

We hunted this unit in '07. 2nd to last day we ran into some guys from OK using horses, mules. They had 4 or 5 nice elk and were packing out another. They got them all on the east side of Round Mt. just south of Crested Butte. There is a public access right off Hwy 135. On a topo map, look for a saddle on the east side, right in the middle. Elk will move there once they start getting pressure from private property hunters. On my last day, I was walking up the north side, came to an open field w/ small spot of aspen. Could smell the elk, but being the novice, I turned around to try to get to the saddle. Made it to the back side of the mountain, but had to start back to make it back before dark. Google Maps will give you a great view of the area. Google Earth will give a great 3-D view. Will go there again if I make it back. Good luck, and let us know how you do.
