Thanks for the site

(St. Helens, Oregon)

I found your site a few weeks back and really appreciate the information you share. This is my first year bow hunting and can use all the help I can get. I've hunted elk with a rifle for about 16 years in Oregon. I hunt Roosevelts in the NW corner of the state in a 3 point or better unit. I got my first elk (a cow) about 12 years ago, then about 7 years ago I hunted another unit and shot a spike. 4 years ago I got my first branch bull (5x5) and last year I got another 5x5. This year I didn't draw my rifle tag for the unit I hunt and decided this was finally the year to start bow hunting (had wanted to for some time).

Once again thank you for your site

Jim

Success indeed
by: Jim

Yes indeed it was a successful hunt. I had my 10 (now 11) year old son with me on many days. The day I came to full draw we had worked this bull for over an hour. I had Nate tucked into a Vine maple while we were watching the heard in the trees (we had headed them off after seeing them in a clear cut). The Bull came within about 20 yards of him and he was excited beyond excitement. So far no success withe the cow Hunt. My buddy has only been able to hook up with me twice. He missed a couple times on the first day. The second day Nate and I were watching a heard for about 30 minutes when Charlie finally came around the Elk winded him and busted. I knew where they were headed but with no radio response Charlie went the wrong way. Sure enough they had gone exactly they way I figured. Anyway we have till the15th of next month and should be able to close the deal. Been getting in the woods when I get the chance as I get a thrill out of just seeing the animals and learning more about them.

Congrats on a fine 2010 Bull.

Hunt Success
by: Dave, Elk Hunting Tips (MT)

You're making me count the weeks until archery season starts, Jim! About 28.

Can you use radios in OR to hunt with? Can't here in MT or CO.

Succesful Elk Hunt
by: Dave- MT ElkHuntingTips

Thanks for the update, Jim. Let us know how the December hunt goes for your friend. Coming to full draw as you did on an elk at 25 yards is what it's all about. You used wisdom not taking the shot. Looking back it always "looks" like you should have taken the shot, but always go with your gut at the moment, not hopeful thinking. You had a successful hunt! Complete success will include putting an elk in the freezer eventually.

update
by: Jim

Well bow season ended a couple weeks ago and no elk bagged for me. Not to worry though because I learned a lot and got to come to full draw on a bull at about 25 yrds, but he was turned away just a bit too much for my comfort. Afterwards playing it back I probably would've been good to release but wasn't sure of the shot so didn't take the chance. I saw plenty of elk A friend got a bull while I watched from about 200 yrds away, was cool to watch and listen to the sounds. Another friend has a rifle cow hunt starting in December that I'll be helping out with.

Bow Hunting Elk

Thanks for your encouragement, Jim. There's a lot more info we'd like to get put up on the site, but the day jobs keeps getting in the way. Not to mention hunting season from the first of September through the end of November! (Priority!)

I think you will get hooked on archery. In many ways it's easier than rifle hunting, but can be really frustrating! Have fun! Keep us posted.
