I'm hoping members can offer some general advice on setting up and identifying hang up spots for bulls. Please assume that I'd be set up near heavy elk traffic, mindful of the wind.
Most bulls will hang up just out of range! That narrows it down unscientifically. I know that's not what you're looking for, but try to put yourself out there PAST your last cow talk location, if you're doing your own calling. Or, set someone up calling behind you and put yourself 75 yards, or so ahead of the caller. The bull will be looking for the cow he hears and will hang up where you are set up, if you can guess which way he will approach that is.
A mistake I made last year, was letting a small rise be immediately between me and the incoming bull, regardless of my move forward after calling. Bulls will just peer over those rises, if they're wary. I had to sit and watch those antlers move back and forth just above that little rise for several minutes. The bigger, wiser bulls will use whatever cover they can while they are trying to verify what they hear is what they are looking for. Time for a decoy? I've never used one? Any decoy success stories out there?
