Pine Beetle Infestation- How will it affect elk hunting?

by Dave
(Western MT)

Here in western MT we have severe and widespread destruction of mature trees from the pine beetle problem. I'm not sure how far that spreads to other states?

I think in the long run it will actually be better for the health of the forests and provide better graze for elk. In the meantime, I'm not sure I want to be in the areas of dead trees during a strong wind!

Anyone out there with information about the long term effects of this mess? I'll try to get some pictures to post sometimes. It's ugly.

Pine Beetle- wide spread nature taking place
by: matt

It seems the problem knows no bounds. From your forest all the way to the forest's of Alaska the beetle seems to be winning over trees in many areas-Mother nature will do what's best.

Pine Beetle Kill

That's not very encouraging, Pat. We have tons of it here in my area of MT. Seems like fire would be a better option.

Pine beetles in Oregon
by: Pat Cassidy

We had a severe infestation in Eastern Oregon that primarily affected lodgepole pine in the late '70s - early '80s. Thousands of acres of dead trees. Lots of it burned, much got harvested and the rest fell down and made a real mess.
If you like walking 4 feet off the ground on down timber I guess it's OK. It will take a very long time for these to rot away.
Good for rabbits and bobcats.
I stay out of those areas. Lots more to choose from here.
Good hunting!
