Journal?

by Jim
(St. Helens, Oregon)

Does anyone keep a journal of their Elk hunts and Scouting? I've been thinking I should start keeping a journal or at least notes every time I go out in the woods looking for elk. Where I saw them, time of day, what they were doing, number of elk. I already keep this in my head but things get a little foggy there from time to time as I get a little bit older (not that I'm old). If so do you have a form you use? I can't always have the laptop with me but probably should have a small note pad in the rig or pack. Anyway just curious.

Thanks
Jim

Journal

I keep a journal for the main one week bowhunting trip I do each year. I do note the date, weather conditions and how many elk I've seen. However, as I read over previous year's journals, what I end up valuing the most are the little stories like about how my buddie did this, or how beautiful the sunset was that night, or how I saw the huge falling star as I headed out for a morning hunt, or how I caught a bunch of trout from creek and fried them up. Reading about it being 35 degrees, with mostly cloudy skies and a slight breeze from the northwest just isn't too interesting, nor have I found any reliable correlation between the number of elk I see and weather conditions.
