Coons Canyon elk hunt report
by: Skip Shephard

Well, my cow elk archery hunt came to an end with no shots fired! Coons Canyon hunt was not what I had hoped. The hunt area was challenging, elk were in there, but we did not see elk in our hunt area. But we did elsewhere. We are both disappointed, but that's hunting. If it were easy, and we were successful every time, everyone would be out there!
Now I am making other plans for this year and next.

Skip,

Good luck, there were elk everywhere. I was into them everyday but as they say it's hunting and I didn't get a clean shot until the final 1/2 hour of the final day, 50yds and I missed.

Good luck to ya,
Chuck

Coons Canyon Elk Hunt Info
by: Skip Shephard

Good news for those who drew elk tags for Unit 1, Coons Canyon and other areas. It appears from talking to folks who have recently been up to Greer, SpringerVille and Egar etc. that the Wallow Fire has not significantly interrupted the wildlife, particularly elk and deer, in those areas.

I talked with a friend yesterday, Sunday 7/31, who was recently up in that area and he said they saw hundreds of elk all over the place. A lot were near the roads and in pastures browsing on any green grass etc. they could find.

AZFG reported about two weeks ago; that in some of the burned areas, small shoots of green grass were already coming up!So get your gear ready elk hunters; we still have a chance to bag an elk.

Fire
by: Chuck

Dave, It really sounds encouraging, I hope your right. I will probably wait until a week or two before the hunt to scout. Thanks again for your help. If you hear anything new please let me know. Chuck

Elk Love Wildfires
by: Dave, Elk Hunting Tips (MT)

Glad to hear all is well, Chuck. I'll bet there will be plenty of elk in that green grass in the burned area this fall.

Elk thrive on the aftermath of wildfires. Any previous scouting will have to be redone, of course. Bedding areas may have been destroyed or altered. The elk will deal with it just fine.

Fire update
by: Chuck

Thanks for the contact information Dave. Mr Gagnon was able to put me in touch with the game manager for that area and he assured me that not only are elk resilient to fire but that grass was already growing in areas that burned one week prior and that the elk were using it. As long as they reopen the forest all of us with early tags should have a good hunt.

AZ on Fire!
by: Skip Shephard

Well the upcoming elk season is not looking good in the North section of the White Mountains. The second largest wild fire in our history is still burning thousands of acres and is uncontained. That means the Forest Service will no doubt restrict and or prohibit human intrusion into those areas. Our only hope to salvage our big game hunts is RAIN and now!! The situation is grave to say the least. Arizona is in a 10 year droubt and tinder dry. This fire was started by an unattended campfire; they are saying. This means, human caused and that means restrictions galore will be coming. If anyone wants to get more info. feel free to email me at sirskip3@aol.com

Fire impact
by: chuck

I am curious as to how the major wildfires in the Greer area are going to effect our elk hunts in August. Do the elk move out of the area? Or perhaps they will be concentrated toward the western portions of the hunt area where the fire didn't reach (not yet anyway). Does anyone know of a contact for the federal wildlife biologist in the area that may have more information on the elk herds and there tendencies?
