How late in the year can you use cow calls?

by Jimmy
(New Mexico)

I plan on hunting the 2nd rifle season in Colorado. My question is:

Will a cow call still attract bulls in late October?

Elk Talk
by: Dave, Elk Hunting Tips (MT)

Jimmy, elk talk to each other year 'round. If you are hunting cow elk late in the season, you might be able to make a call that sounds like an older cow calling other cows to you. You could sound like a cow and calf to help get closer to a herd. Or, like a lost calf to call the maternal instinct cows to you. Calling bulls to you well past any estrus period would be difficult. Regardless, you can always mask your own sounds with cow talk to keep from alarming them with foot noises. Just avoid making human noises, like plastic, metal, etc. clanging. They won't tolerate that. don't overdo it, but sounding like an elk when you're in elk country is good.
