Full Freezer!

by Colo archer- Joel
(Colorado)

I spent most of the 2010 Colorado archery season calling elk for friends and haven't had much time to myself. After some close calls with bulls and realizing that the meat from last year's 6x6 is nearly gone, I decided to take what ever comes in. On Sept. 21st I closed the deal on a mature cow. She came in to some estrous calls from the hyper-lip. I made a good shot and she fell 150 yards later.

I was on public land and doing it myself. I know most people enjoy the pictures and stories of big bulls and big racks, but this is my 2010 success story. And the freezer is full! Good luck to everyone and happy hunting!

Thanks Dave in MI

Thanks Dave in MI. Looks like you had a successful year yourself. Congrats on your first elk! Having grown up in PA, I know the limited opportunities you face for elk back east. I was just lucky enough to pack up after college and move to CO. Not everyone is so lucky to live in elk country. Sounds like you had a good hunt and made the most of it. Again, congratulations! Now go shoot one of those BIG MI bucks!

Good choice!!

Congrats! Glad you got some time for yourself. Always nice to take a good bull when you can, but a good cow fills the freezer just the same!

Way to go Joel!

Man, those cows taste good. It ain't easy to get next to a cow elk for a bow shot. Sometimes the local ranchers where I hunt ask "Why don't you kill cows? Why do you shoot bulls?" (The elk compete with their cattle for graze.) We tell them, "Bulls are easier to call in than cows!" It's the cows that bust you when you're trying to sneak up on a bull. They are the lookouts. They are the eyes of the herd. It's important for us to be willing to kill cows when we can and populations are too high. Good job!
