Great Labor Day bull Dave! I just got back from cleaning up after packing out my elk. I shot it last night at about 6pm. Unfortunately, it is not sporting a rack. I hunt on high pressure public land, and have called in quite a few bulls despite the pressure. But last night, I decided to take a lonely cow. The season is closing in a few days, and my bull meat from last year is nearly gone. I am still proud of the hunt and clean ethical kill. Sounds like you made a great shot yourself. He's an awesome bull!

Dave- by: CO archer-Joel
Dave,
As I write this, I just got home from another hunt. Again, the bulls were fired up tonight. In reference to the calls; I use a primos hyper lip single. I was mixing up some chirps and estrous whines. Once I get them bugling, I try to fire them up with the whines. That's what worked on the 5x5 earlier this week. I always have a reed call in my mouth for when they get close because the hyper lip is just too loud to suck them in the last few yards. I did not bugle at all to those bulls, but tonight I was having trouble locating them, so I threw out a few bugles. Once I got a response, I stuck to the cow calls. Nothing close enough for a shot tonight. One bull hung up on me at about 80 yards. As you most likely know, it is tough to draw them in those last few yards when you are calling by yourself. Good luck in MT this year!

Calling Bull Elk by: Dave, MT
What kind of call brought this bull in? Cow talk? What kind of cow talk? Just chirping or did you whine a bit? Any bugling on your part? Glad to hear you're having success with calling. Our archery season starts tomorrow!

Close call by: Colorado Archer
Its Sept. 2nd, and I have already called in a few bulls. Last night I had a decent 5x5 running in. At 65 yards, the wind thermal shifted down hill to the bull and he was gone in a flash! Given the warm temperatures and how early it is in the season, I was pleased to see the bulls eagerness to respond to the calls. The public land that I hunt has been littered with hunters. You just need to find that "hole" where they go when the pressure hits. I have found that hole and hope to have a successful story in the near future. Good luck to everyone!

Mardee: Over the counter? by: Dave, MT
Mardee, can't you get an over the counter elk tag?
Please share more of your recipes on the recipe forum. They don't have to be exact. Just slop it up there!

OOPS! by: MarDee McDougal
I missed the cut-off date for applying for my "hunt" permit for this time around. Thought the date was 2 weeks later than it was. :-( So, guess I'll just have to bask in the joys of this past hunt & ration the spoils thereof. I keep finding new ways to cook my elk...each gets better than the last.
My best to all of you out there...& don't do what I did of "sleep thru" the cut-off date next time.
