WY Marines!
by: Jimmy

Hey, I was born and raised in Wyoming until I left for the Marines. I grew up elk hunting area 70 every year, my dad has killed over 25 elk in the region. I was curious about unit 67, I am planning on hunting it next year. Please let me know if you know of any Marines still in Dubois (preferably older) :) I'd love any insight on the area! Cheers

Spelling
by: SSG Beckmann

Thanks Dave for corrections, and thanks for comments. The Gentleman name Larry, I'm wondering if that's Larry McKnotten from Du Bois. He's father was great Marine. Lot's of good Soldiers come out of that little community. SSG Ralph Beckmann

Hunting Elk
by: Anonymous

This is SSG Beckmann again. Notice I miss spelled some words in my comments. Never said I could spell! I hope you'll understand what I was trying to get accross. I'm over here in Bad land country, and have to keep a good ear opening for incoming rounds. Happy Elk Hunting, God bless the good people of Du Bois. SEMPER FI SSG Ralph Beckmann

Elk hunting tips
by: SSG Beckmann

I'm no expert in hunting Elk. But I had some good teachers, Bill Frances 92yrs age. Never give up,when You think there are no Elk, there they are, right in front of you. You just need to know what to look for. Bill told me that if in the woods and you smell something musky, you're into elk. Keep a keen eye open. They're there. Snow is your best friend for tracking, but in Wyoming if its starts to snow on you, you better get out quick,or be prepared to spend the night out in the cold. Always pack for two days out in the cold. I learned this in the Marines and Afghanistan: food, water, lighter, matches, cold weather gear. If you don't have it you can't use it. Do a lot of glassing with binos. Don't go as fast walking where you can't hear anything. We forget to use our God given senses; smell, hearing, seeing, sense of something out there. This is true in Afghanistan; if you sense something in your gut, it's there. Any solider knows that. Get away from main trails, roads, heavy travel areas, have a good map of area you're hunting and a compasses. Make sure you know how to use a compass. Plot. Never ever give up. Too many hunters give up. Push yourself; next hill, next meadow, next stream, you'll see elk, whether you can shoot them is up to you. Make sure you site in at the elevation you're at. Especially if your coming from sea level. Du Bois is full of elk, but they're not going to come to you. You have to put in the sweat and effort to get them. SEMPER FI SSG Ralph Beckmann

Hunting Du bois
by: SSG Beckmann

Been hunting this area for long time. People in Du Bois are great, and food is fantastic! You can go and any direction and hunt, with out seeing another hunter. I love this area. My Dad introduce Me to this area in the early 80's. I was right out of the Marine Corps. I knew an outfitter there named Bill Frances. I saw Bill a year ago. He's 92 yrs old, knew some Marines there too. Bill McNotten, I think that's how you spell it, Sorry Bill not spelling your name right. They showed Me all the right places. Encountered a grizzly early in the morning one day, not more then ten feet away. It was eating a moose. I was in the wrong place. Grizzly growled out loud, I was hunting with an M-1 grand, backed out slowly, no problem. I've always seen elk, just have to get out of the vehicle and do some serious walking, which i did in the corps. Had some great encounters with herds of elk, and even had one sniff Me! Laying on the ground trying to see if bull was on the other side of some small tree's and cow elk came up and sniff at Me! Incredible. I use to get drawn every year, until the 90's. Seem to have a bad spell and not get drawn for ten years. Last year I got drawn, Shot My first elk on opening day, 5x5 not real big, but o.k. My friend who's never shot a bull elk came with Me, I knew the area and took Him into an area where I knew their was elk, sure enough I spot about 20 elk grazing on top of a knoll. Took a GPS reading of location and drove around the other side. I saw three big bulls in that herd, an hour or so later I saw the bull come back out, and then a bang, My friend had just shot a 6x6 bull! Man it was big. Great hunting that year. Also ran into a grizzle, sow with three cubs, she wasn't happy, but let us alone. I'm putting in for 2014, I'm deployed in Afghanistan right now, and can't wait to go hunting in Wyoming again. Hope one day I can buy some land there and settle down. Go Cowboys! SSG Ralph Beckmann

Dubois
by: Larry

I lived in Dubois from 1980 to 1983. I am sure a lot has changed since then but I got an elk each year I lived there. However, we had horses and hunted mostly in the five pockets area. I would recommend up Horse Creek road to the Cougar pass trail head and hike back hunting the N.E. side of the trail head. If you have any specific questions let me know. elkwisperer@aol.com
