Bow Hunting

by Taylor Walker
(Monte Vista, Colorado)

Taylors Elk

Taylors Elk

I am 14 and bow hunting my third year. Ive killed two deer and I have just killed my first Elk. At first when I saw it I got scared because it stared at me more than 3 minutes straight. Then it bugled and I was maybe 25 feet away and it scared me half to death because it vibrated my chest and my dad was like, "Shoot!" At first I was shaking and then I took a deep breath and i could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins, and I shot, I hit it right in the rib cage. It was loud. Kind of like a gunshot. Then it ran about ten yards and stopped for about 7 seconds and I shot it again in the rib cage then it just laid there for about 45 minutes looking around until it finally laid its head down and died. If it weren't for this site, I probably would have went right up to it after the first shot and it could have ran away. I thank this site for making my hunting trips a lot easier.

Nice job, Taylor! Great story. I'm am very happy for you (and a bit envious:). I'm 43 and just starting bow hunting. Have yet to get a deer or an elk with a bow. Wish I had started at your age. You have a very long and exciting hunting career ahead of you. Good job to your dad, as well!

Great bull and congratulations! Sounds like you did the right thing by letting him lay before approaching. They are amazing animals. Well done!

That story just gives me goose-bumps!!! Nothing better than a successful elk hunt...and I'm 150% in favor of young people hunting. I've hunted all my life & I'm a lady, 76 years young. Have never bow-hunted, but have friends who do. Whatever works for you. Keep it up, stay safe & enjoy a happy, fulfilling life!!

First Bull at 14!

That's awesome, Taylor! I know the feeling about being face to face with a big bull staring at you. Most hunters don't recover fast enough from a successful "stick" to take an insurance shot. good thinking.

How far did you have to pack it out?

I'm going to move this submission to Success 2010. Thanks for sharing the story.
