Holding out hope by: Chuck
Adam, Are you and your friend still holding on to the idea that we may actually go Elk hunting this season? The forest is still closed, but the powers at be have not made a decision yet about if the hunts will take place. I am keeping the mindset that I WILL be going just 22 days from today. Keep your fingers crossed!

Fires by: Chuck
Adam,
It looks like this fire is going to devistate most of the eastern portions of the hunt area. If you hear any information on closures and effects this might have on our hunt please let me know.
Thanks for the Hereford Ranch link and let's hope the firefighters can get get the upper hand and stay safe in the process.

White Mountain Hereford Ranch Info by: Adam
Below is a link discussing some of the Hereford ranch history.
8070c is accessible by jeep and virtually most vehicles without 4-wheel drive, as long as they have the ground clearance. 8070c is well marked if accessed thru 261 however, we struggled to locate it off of fr-285. Let me know if you have more success. 261 takes you up the gut of our hunt and seems it may be attractive to elk based on my observations once you get to the southern most end of our hunt boundary. Try and make contact with the ranger station on the west side and the folks at hereford ranch in the middle, pick some brains on the elk summer activity. There is one road open once you get on 260 just west of 373 which may be the road your speaking of, not sure. Lastly, when you're snooping around up in the hills off of 261 open the gates corralling the cows and drive around, the terrain isn't too bad just be sure to shut the gates. Best of luck and let me know how things go

Scouting by: Chuck
Do you know if 8070c is accessable by Jeep? I was also wondering if the Forest Service Road to the West of Halls Creek is open to the public. Thanks for all the input I'll let you know how it goes.

Scouting by: Adam
I doubt I will be able to make it on the 1st or 2nd. I have not hunted this area yet but I just departed Greer the other day. My advice would be to scout around Halls Creek just off of 373 and also snoop around off 261 and try to develop a better sense around 8070c.
If you have time hit the ranger station on the west side of our hunt zone and pick his/her brain. Keep in mind that some of the State land is leased where you see the cows and you are allowed to open the gates for further scouting just remember to shut them. I have a few other plans of attack. I'm PUMPED for the hunt!

Early scouting by: Anonymous
Adam, I will be in the area July 1st and 2nd to figure out my hunt. Have you hunted this area before? If you have time I will be scouting on the 2nd and extra eyes and input would help. Wow that's only one month from today!

July scouting trip by: Chuck Jackson
My hunt is a very early Aug. 5th thru 9th hunt. I plan on going to that area in early July to get familiar with it and maybe talk to some locals and get as much information as I can about the area and what I can expect. Perhaps my experience in early August can help you in your later hunt. Stay in touch.

Hi, I too have an early cow elk archery tag for Coon's Canyon area. I have never hunted this area either. I have fished the Little Colorado River near Greer, AZ. My hunt is from August 29th to Sept 4th. 2001. When is your hunt? Let's stay in touch. Who knows we may run into each other if our dates are the same. My email is sirskip3@aol.com
