Round Mtn.
by: Dave L (MI)

We hunted there in '07. Only saw one elk between 3 guys, but that's another story...

2nd to last day we came across a few "mountain men" type - teepees and all. They were doing great and willing to share info. They had about 4-5 elk and were packing out another. They also had a few nice mule deer. Find Round Mountain, just south of Crested Butte, right on Highway 135 (38°46'57.44"N; 106°52'13.87"W). There is a public access right on the highway, right across from highway transportation dept. (at coordinates above). Can park right there and walk in on the trail around the W side, aallllll the way around to the East side, about 2.5 miles. There is a hiking trail there so it's an easy walk, not many people though. If you check it out on Google Earth you will see a "saddle" between Round Mtn. and a wilderness area. That's where they got all their elk. I followed the path about 3/4 mile and then walked uphill and peaked over a small crest into a small grove of aspen at 38°47'24.44"N; 106°51'52.43"W. Could smell elk and see some beds. Just missed them. Continued back down hill and around to saddle, started getting dark so I turned around and went back to access. The whole mountain is good but get to the saddle and hunt that area.
