Any opinions on using a 20 guage for elk?

by Dave
(Michigan)

Hey all,

Going elk hunting this weekend and am planning on using my H&R Ultra Slug 20 gauge, with Remington's Premier AccuTip bobded sabot slug (260 gr./1850 fps). I've got a 1 1/2" group at 100 yrds.

Used it 2 years ago to take down 2 red deer - with one shot. Bullet passed through both deer.

Not sure how long of a shot I'll have to take, but I've also got my .30-06 sighted in for 250 yrds.

If I'm shooting at about 100 yrds., will the 20 guage be sufficient? Energy, etc?

Dave,

Please post the story about the kill with a 20 gauge. I'd love to hear it.

It worked just fine:) Didn't want to ruin any meat so I aimed a little back (at 69 yards) and hit the back of both lungs. Didn't hit a single bone/rib, went clean through, elk only WALKED about 30-40 feet stood for about a minute and fell over.

20 gauge for elk

Dave,
You're basically going to be using a muzzleloader with that gauge and bullet (slug) choice and it should work at the same range you would use a muzzleloader. It'll be a challenge, but put it in the right place and it'll work on elk the same as it did on red deer! Good luck!!
