300 Remington Ultra Mag

by Randy B
(Eagle, CO)

I'll throw in the 300 Remington Ultra Mag. I used to hunt with a .308, (Remington 800 VLS, heavy barrel, all the goodies) but at just shy of 15 pounds I got tired of carrying it through the woods.

I did a ton of research on calibers only, as I knew I was buying another Remington 700. After much back and forth, I decided on the 300 RUM. I like that you can get factory loads in several different power levels. They match .30-06, 300 win mag and a "hot" load that is ballistically superior to the other two. The 300 RUM shoots nearly as flat as a .270, but carries much more energy.

The drawbacks... ammo is fairly difficult to find. I have to special order mine through a FFL friend of mine. The recoil is managable for me, but I'm 6'03", 280lbs. I would imagine it could be difficult for smaller shooters. I got the basic Remington 700, with the matte finish and synthetic stock (SPS?). I haven't weighed the rifle/optics yet, but with a 3-9x40 Leupold I'd say it is around 9lbs.

I hunt western Colorado where the terrain is nasty, steep and the weather changes every 10 minutes. So far, I'm in love with this rifle. I'm comfortable shooting out to 450 yards (too long for a typical hunting shot), and if in some un-foreseen situation I need to take a shot at that distance, I'm not going to question if my caliber is capable or not.

300 Mags Kill the Most Trophies

by Dave, Elk Hunting Tips.Net
(Garrison, MT)

I just read that 300 magnums of one sort or another have killed the most trophy elk. (I think it was just elk. Did anyone else see that?) Second place weapon for killing the most trophies was... BOWS! That doesn't make them the best elk rifle, but it's an interesting stat.

300 Win Mag 180gr hand loads

by Rick Freeman
(Whitehorse, Yukon Canada)

Knocks a 60" bull Moose down at 500 yards, so I'm sure it will do well with Elk. I guess I will really find out this Sept 2010. 2nd year of Elk draws in the Yukon and I get DRAWN!! I know the pictures a moose but it is the biggest bodied moose I have seen in over 20 years hunting the beast!

.300 UMSA

I like the Remington .300 Ultra Mag short Action. Its very lightweight and has a lot of knock down power.
